"If so, it makes sense for them to exploit each new planet for material to build more spaceships so they could move on. The goal of his BCD - Blue Collar Defenses - is to be varied and active enough pre-snap that Ball State is never “a sitting duck” for perfect-play seeking opposing coordinators. They’ll roll behind five returning starting offensive linemen, including NFL prospect Curtis Blackwell at right guard.ĭefensively, 31-year-old Tyler Stockton debuted as a play-caller last season, and Neu and Goetz rave about his long-term future. Star receivers Justin Hall (an FBS-leading 257 career catches) and Yo’Heinz Tyler (16.1 yards per catch) also return for second-year offensive coordinator Kevin Lynch. Plitt’s championship season got him invited to the Manning Passing Academy this summer. It’s “a West Coast offense on steroids,” including an RPO game similar to the one Joe Burrow and Joe Brady made outlandishly famous at LSU in 2019. Ball State’s offense is a gumbo of the New Orleans Saints offense Neu learned as Drew Brees’ quarterbacks coach in New Orleans mixed with his life experience. Neu, who calls the plays, brings a unique perspective from playing in Canada and the Arena League, and nearly a decade coaching in the Arena League. Ball State averaged 34.3 points per game last year, with Plitt throwing 17 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. Over time, it transformed from nail to hammer within the league, winning six straight MAC games, including upsetting No. In 2017, Ball State endured a stretch of three straight conference games without a touchdown - a 142-15 gauntlet against Western Michigan, Akron and Central Michigan. The Cardinals went 1-15 in MAC play during Neu’s first two years, which is part of the reason defensive coordinator Tyler Stockton has a saying on the white board in his office borrowed from former Virginia coach Al Groh: “Don’t want to feel like on Saturdays? Then recruit your tail off.” ![]() “Just because you got there a year ago doesn't mean it's going to happen again. Six different programs have won the MAC over the past six seasons – Bowling Green (2015), Western Michigan (2016), Toledo (2017), Northern Illinois (2018), Miami (2019) and Ball State (2020) – making the MAC an ode to annual unpredictability.įamous coaching alums like Urban Meyer (Bowling Green) and Matt Campbell (Toledo) never won league titles as head coaches, and no team has repeated since Northern Illinois in 20. The MAC’s talent differential is minuscule between penthouse and basement, and favorites reliably get caught from behind. There certainly won’t be anyone around the MAC conceding the title to Ball State. “That’s another huge reason everyone came back,” Plitt said. He’s from the area, starred at quarterback at Ball State and brings a neighborly Midwest manner that resonates with the players. When Ball State has predawn offseason workouts, Neu greets every player at the door of the facility to fist bump them as they walk in. “And it's unpopular to choose this avenue of, ‘Let's give them some time here to grow the program.’ I'm very proud and appreciative of the fact that they stayed patient and let us see that process through.” “It is a results-oriented business and everybody wants the quick fix,” Neu said. In a climate in college athletics where athletic directors often see firing coaches as a path to career advancement, Goetz showed rare patience. “We were positioned to have a chance to make the jump.” “It was unquestionable that he had the locker room,” Goetz said. Her research transcended statistical tells. Goetz saw the data points of improvement after Neu went 2-8, 4-10 and 5-7 from 2017 to 2019. That bond can be tied, in part, to a lesson in administrative patience. “Everyone wanted to be around each other, it’s a testament to the bond we have.” “Everyone was like, ‘If you’re staying, I’m going to stay,” said Plitt, who has already received his MBA. You have to have one of the best seasons you’ve ever had.” “In order to do that, we have to win the MAC and go to a bowl game. “Our goal is to go to a New Year’s Six bowl,” star quarterback Drew Plitt told Yahoo Sports. The Cardinals won the school’s first MAC title since 1996, completing a gradual ascent to the top of the league under coach Mike Neu that saw patient and gradual growth that’s rare in the sport - four losing seasons that culminated last year with a program flip to 7-1. 19 San Jose State in the Arizona Bowl.īall State is a portrait of the glut of veteran riches that will abound in college football in 2021. Think about Central Florida’s baseball team going from Orlando to Provo, Utah, to play BYU. Men’s and women’s basketball is a bit more difficult because of more away games, but again, chartered flights elevate much of the strain.īut what about volleyball? Or track? Or swimming? Or softball?Īn overwhelming majority of the time, such programs fly commercially, and the flights are rarely direct. If you’re on the football team, travel isn’t a huge issue there are only five or six away games and flights are chartered. With a couple of Power Five conferences soon to stretch across at least three time zones ― the Big 12 will cross three while the Big Ten will cross four ― more may eventually become transcontinental, too. This is the tip of a very large iceberg that isn’t being talked about much in the frenzied expansion of conferences ― and it could have a significant impact on college athletes, especially in Olympic or non-revenue sports. “There’s just some challenges that we’re going to have to work through on travel,” Lyons said.Ĭarlson: Alynah Torres and Cydney Sanders weren't a package deal, but they're happy to still be together Having more far-flung teams means the Big 12 may not always be able to avoid travel craziness for the schools on the fringes. Starting next year, the Big 12’s footprint will expand dramatically with the addition of BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati and Houston. “That has to be kept as a priority, too,” Lyons said, “but now it’s going to be more than us.” Even though he’s at the farthest-flung school in the conference, Lyons actually has little concern about his teams getting crazy back-to-back road trips.Įven though the Big 12 can’t eliminate long trips for the Mountaineers ― West Virginia is 855 miles from its closest conference foe, Iowa State ― the league has always done what it can to make sure the Mountaineers avoid such things. What he doesn’t fear are over-the-top travel issues. ![]() Oh, the West Virginia athletic director wants to see if his teams get a tough string of opponents or a fluky stretch of games, but every administrator has those concerns. Shane Lyons doesn’t worry much when the Big 12 releases conference schedules. Cut the electrical tape holding the outer cabling in place. Roll the brake hood forward and carefully unwind until just below the levers. The front sections of outer cable run under the bartape, so you’ll need unwrap this to get at them. Undo the anchor bolts on your derailleurs. Using cable cutters, chop the end caps off the cables. Shift onto the smallest sprocket or chainring. ![]() How to replace road bike shifter cables Step 1: Prep the bike and cut the old cables Just make sure you have the right tools, then follow our eight-step guide and get stuck in. While a quick squirt of lubricant can often freshen them up, once they start to feel gritty it’s time to swap both inner and outer parts.Īlthough internally routed cables can prove tricky to replace, if your lines run alongside the frame, swapping them isn’t a tricky job. Constant use and exposure to the elements means that the lines joining shifters and derailleurs will eventually deteriorate and start to affect your shifting performance – the most common symptom being a reluctance to shift downwards, as your derailleur springs start to lose the battle against increased friction. This content was originally posted by a Car Throttle user on our Community platform and was not commissioned or created by the CT editorial team. There’s not a pro rider or mechanic in the world who wouldn’t swap a top-of-the-line groupset connected up with grotty, old cables for an entry-level equivalent with fresh, snappy ones. Until we start exercising more personal responsibility, though, FCA’s lawyers are going to be in for another big payday… In fact, if you’re going to do away with a lever, using a dial is probably the next-most intuitive switch for an automatic gearbox. Using a dial to control something isn’t a foreign concept to most of us. Speaking from experience, it’s not hard to get the hang of it, but you always have to be careful.īut blaming rotary gear selectors for roll-away incidents is, in no uncertain terms, frivolous. And, while FCA definitely didn’t do anyone any favours by putting in that stupid ratcheting shifter, it ultimately did what it was designed to do. But that doesn’t change the fact that they were negligent. I don’t mean to disrespect anyone who died or was injured as a direct result of FCA vehicles fitted with, what I frankly consider to be needlessly awkward gear selectors. It’s not overly hard to put the clutch in, shift into neutral, or both so why does the government need to get involved when someone doesn’t put their automatic-transmission car into Park? As an owner of a truck that can be started, in gear, with the clutch all the way out, “design flaws” are not an acceptable defense for your vehicle getting away on you. You are responsible for securing your vehicle when you park it. You are responsible for understanding how your vehicle’s controls work. You are in care and control of your vehicle when you are behind the wheel. Russell and the entire staff at Shift were just incredible from the moment my craigslist search. If you possess a driver’s licence, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. One of the most amazing buying experiences Ive ever had. That’s right, barring mechanical failure, it’s the driver. Speaking of responsibility, do you know who’s responsible for putting the car in Park? In fact, if you’re responsible, neither is the T-grip. While I don’t think that’s a bad idea, it hardly means the knob is dangerous. However, the knob-Luddites have a fairly trivial answer-one could say that FCA might as well just go back to the old-school steering column shifter. ![]() ![]() When electronically-controlled 4WD switches came out, about the only bad thing about them that I could think of was that it wouldn’t let you purposefully sabotage your transfer case (and your life) by shifting it into low-range while on the highway. ![]() A lot of people seem to hate the Ram knob, and I don’t know why. So, when NHTSA recently announced an investigation into a series of rollaway incidents involving Ram trucks, I was annoyed but unsurprised. As a result, the rotary gear selector is making its way into more of the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep lineup. You also have somewhat of a tactile cue to let you know what gear you are in. By getting rid of a console shifter (something that I think should never be in a truck to begin with), you make it possible to have either a large centre storage area or a bench seat. I’ve actually held the controversial opinion that the infamous “Ram knob” is a smart piece of design. But not every new gear shifting mechanism is stupid. ![]() ![]() Taylor kills Marlow while he is arguing with Ripley, then works together with Ripley to try to prevent the reactor explosion. However, they discover Marlow is attempting to detonate the Anesidora's fusion reactor to destroy the station and ensure the Aliens do not come into contact with humanity. Ripley and Ricardo pursue them in hopes of using the Anesidora to escape the station. However, Marlow took her hostage and fled to his ship. Ripley learns from Ricardo that Taylor was sent by Weyland-Yutani to retrieve the Alien, and that she freed Marlow in exchange for the location of LV-426. She overloads the reactor to destroy the hive, but multiple Aliens escape into the station. Waits convinces Ripley to help him contain the Alien by luring it into a remote section of the station and sealing it inside. Ripley speaks with Marlow and learns that the Anesidora crew discovered the derelict Engineer ship on LV-426, where Marlow's wife was impregnated by a facehugger. Ripley, Samuels, and Taylor attempt to spacewalk over to the station to investigate, but their EVA line is severed by debris and the three of them are separated. The group arrive at Sevastopol to find the station damaged and communications dead.
